In German, it means attitude. Let me explain: “The Einstellung effect occurs when the first idea that comes to mind, triggered by familiar features of a problem, prevents a better solution being found. “
Supposed the direct route A to your destination is closed due to construction. Naturally, you find a different, more difficult, route B to get you there. You use route B to get you there everyday for a week. On the eighth day after route A has been declared clear, you continue to use route B. Why. Because it had now become the first idea that came to your mind.
If you look at the following three questions, most people may not be able to answer the first one, but since all three questions use the same problem solving method, they will naturally be able to answer the following two questions.
1. A rooster lays an egg at the very top of a slanted roof. Which side is the egg going to roll off on? Neither, roosters don’t lay eggs.
2. An electric train is going south but the wind is blowing westward Which direction will the smoke from the train be blowing? Its an electric train, it has no smoke!
3. If you found a $30 bill on the floor, would you pick it up? $30 bills don’t exist.
That was just to give you a sense of what type of thinking I`m talking about. Just because you get an idea first in your mind, it doesn`t mean that it is the best idea.
