Modesty: We lose so much in translation

“Why do you cover your head?”–a common question.

I don’t ‘just’ cover my head, I cover the rest of my body as well. Its called Modesty (Haya in arabic). Modesty is not just covering up every inch of your skin. No. It has a larger meaning. Something to the effect of self respect, bashfulness, having a scruple, and having awareness of God. This is one of the many examples to illustrate how much is lost in translation from Arabic to any other language.  I am not sure why and how we manage to focus so much on covering up the women of the society when the essence of this religion focuses on peace and discovering the oneness of God.

In my opinion, modesty is context-related. I think the point is to avoid unnecessary attention and being self-conscious. Be aware of the gaze.
